The Osnabrück market in the old town is the "living room of the city". It is considered, along with the cathedral castle, to be one of the founding cells of the city. Archaeological excavations have shown that a market settlement existed west of the cathedral as early as the 9th century. The market forms a central point in the old town as a link between the Heger-Tor district in the west and the cathedral complex in the east. The architectural ensemble of the town hall, town scales, St. Mary's Church, town houses and market fountain is characteristic of the market. A traditional weekly market is no longer held on the square, but numerous events take place here. For example, the market regularly offers space for the Osnabrück Christmas market, May Week and the children's gathering at the end of the hobby horse riding. In the past, the promotion celebrations of the football club VfL Osnabrück, the "Osnabrück eats well" festival and other events and festivals have taken place here. Demonstrations also take place on the square, which is steeped in history for urban democracy. https://erleben.osnabrueck.de/de/stadt-erleben/gehenswertes/m

The impressive St. Mary's, a Lutheran parish, civic, and market church, rises in the market square. Construction of the Gothic hall church began in the 13th century and was completed around 1430/40. This building was preceded by a Romanesque predecessor church, which was first documented in 1177. The church suffered severe damage from incendiary bombs during World War II, but was rebuilt in the post-war period. The publicly accessible church tower offers an impressive view over the entire city. Passing the church bells and through medieval stone passageways, one climbs to the viewing platform located at a height of 50 meters. Together with Osnabrück Cathedral, St. Catherine's, and St. John's, St. Mary's is one of the four medieval churches that encircle the city center. The oldest part of the building is the church tower. At 80 meters high, it is the second tallest in Osnabrück (after the tower of St. Catherine's Church). Architectural elements such as the rounded Romanesque arch at the transition between the tower and the nave bear witness to its nearly 1000-year history. Inside the church, above the altar, is the city's seal and coat of arms: the Osnabrück Wheel. A total of four portals lead into the three-aisled hall church with its arcades and ribbed vaulting. The main entrance of St. Mary's, the so-called Bride's Portal on the south side of the church, is particularly striking. The figures in the jambs to the right and left depict the wise and foolish virgins. The Coronation of the Virgin is depicted in the arch of the portal. Characteristic of St. Mary's are the four gables decorated with tracery and the large pointed-arch windows. The Gothic buttresses and arches that define the chancel, the pinnacles, gargoyles, and balustrades also lend St. Mary's a dynamic and vibrant character. https://erleben.osnabrueck.de/de/stadt-erleben/sehenswertes/marienkirche/
