The Obersee in Monschau offers beautiful views of the Rur Valley. The Eifel viewpoint "Grünenthal" near Monschau-Imgenbroich, at an elevation of 490 meters, offers a particularly panoramic view of the valley before the Rur flows into the reservoir. The Eifel viewpoints "Schöne Aussicht" and "Wolfshügel" in Simmerath-Einruhr also offer impressive perspectives of the lake and the surrounding landscape.

The southern end of the Obersee is embedded in the High Fens-Eifel Nature Park. There are also several nature reserves in the Rur valley and the side valleys. Here you can cycle through pure nature and find many rare plants and observe animals.

The Rursee is an integral part of the travel program when visiting the North Eifel. It stretches between Schwammenauel and Rurberg, where the Obersee (drinking water protection area) joins, which in turn leads to Einruhr. The proverbial third in the group is the Urft Dam.
