During the Inden opencast mine, Lake Lucherberg was located near the mining area and was drained starting in 2021.[1] On October 1, 2021, the lake was closed to sailing,[2] and preparations were made for its drainage from that date. The decline in water levels was clearly visible since January 2022. In spring 2024, the water level had dropped so much that the fish stocks had to be salvaged, and shortly thereafter, the lake was completely drained.

The Little Indeman is by far the best place to experience this open-pit mine. You stand on the edge of this immense pit. Tiny white dots creeping toward you in the distance at the bottom of the pit reveal themselves minutes later to be white vans speeding along the gravel roads below, kicking up clouds of dust—small clouds of dust seen from above. The gigantic excavators appear to be stationary, but that's deceptive. Because of the distance, you don't hear them, and everything seems to move more slowly. From the Little Indeman, you get a staggering view of the scale of these mines.

You'll have a fantastic view when you climb the Indemann. The surrounding area features a fantastic golf course, minigolf, a huge playground, and a restaurant. A lovely day trip destination, also accessible by car.
