In the mid-19th century, the castle gained notoriety due to a protracted divorce dispute between its then owner. The approximately 19-hectare castle park, designed by landscape architect Maximilian Friedrich Weyhe as an English landscape garden, is now a publicly accessible recreational area. One preserved relic is the former garden pavilion, which now houses a memorial to the politician Ferdinand Lassalle.
