The Deesbach fore-dam is idyllically located in the Lichte valley, near the towns of Deesbach and Unterweißbach in Thuringia. Since it was put into operation in 1991, it has been damming the Lichte. At times it was used as a source of drinking water for the region. Today it fulfils its role as a fore-dam for the preliminary purification of water for the Leibis-Lichte dam. The fore-dam can only be reached on foot or by bike. From here, several beautiful hiking trails lead through the Thuringian Forest.

A wonderful dam 😊. The foundation stone for the dam was laid in 2002. After 3 years, in 2005, it was completed and the water could be dammed. After another 3 years, it was put into operation.

The Leibis/Lichte dam is currently the most modern and youngest large drinking water dam in Germany.

Most of the paths around are fully asphalted and the most difficult section is the climb at the beginning. The wall itself has a visitor center and is of course impressive to look at. The paths are well signposted.

If you come here by bike and are already at the end of your strength, you can take the mountain railway into the upper mountains to the plateau in Oberweißbach and then continue the tour. In general, the ride on the mountain railway is a beautiful experience.

The road has a very good surface and is not heavily used. Besides, nature is beautiful. You always drive along the river. In summer the trees provide shade and it is not so hot.
