Viborg Cathedral is a magnificent Romanesque church that stands as a central landmark in the city. While the current building is largely a 19th-century reconstruction, it is renowned for the incredible frescoes by artist Joakim Skovgaard that adorn its interior. These vibrant paintings tell the story of the Bible and are a truly stunning sight to behold. It's a powerful and historically significant place that is well worth a visit.

Not far from the cathedral is the Latin Garden, Viborg's oldest garden. Dating back to 1726, it originally belonged to the official residence of the director of Viborg's Latin School. The exact age of the Black Brethren Church and the monastery is unknown, but among the first Dominican monasteries in Denmark, Aarhus (1227) and Ribe (1228) are mentioned. It is assumed that the Black Brethren Church and the monastery were founded at the same time as the monastery in Aarhus. The greatest disaster ever to strike the Black Brethren Church was undoubtedly the city fire of June 25, 1726. An accident during beer brewing on a farm in Nørretorv sparked the fire, which spread rapidly from house to house. No fewer than 71 farms, 78 houses, and stables fell victim to the flames, and when the fire was extinguished after a few days, 215 families were left homeless. The cathedral and the Black Brethren Church burned down completely, and extensive restoration work had to be initiated.
