Ærøskøbing is one of the most picturesque small towns in Denmark, the town is also known as the fairytale town. Many historic buildings from the 18th century have been preserved, the first mention of the town dates back to the 15th century, but Ærøskøbing is dated around 1250. The listed town, which is popular with tourists, has almost 1000 inhabitants. The old town with its numerous half-timbered and brick buildings, the market square near the church and the colorful beach huts to the north-west are particularly popular. In terms of transport, the town is connected to Svendborg by ferry.

The octagonal Dutch windmill in the small port town of Søby dates back to 1881. When it was built on the hill, it was still outside of town. Today it is surrounded by a green area in the middle of the residential area. In 2021, the gallery surrounding the mill, which is also the town's landmark, was renovated. Søby is the smallest of the three main towns on Ærø and also the northernmost town on the island.
