In the dunes and on the beaches along the Danish west coast in the holiday areas there are still many remnants of the German occupation during the Second World War: Large, partly half-sunken bunkers that were once part of the Atlantic Wall. There are still a lot of bunkers to see, especially in the holiday resorts of Blåvand and Søndervig. In the years 1942 to 1944, the coasts of France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Denmark, Norway, the British Channel Islands and of course the German North Sea coast were occupied by the Germans and thus affected by planning and construction. In Denmark, the defense line of the Atlantic Wall stretched along the west coast for a length of approx. 2,685 km. The German plan was to expand the Atlantic coast with a "belt of bulwarks" over a length of approx. 5000 km and to create a line of fortifications with the so-called Atlantic Wall, which should prevent an invasion by the Allied troops with thousands of bunkers and various defense devices . Fortunately, the time of the German occupation during the Second World War is now many decades ago, but due to the robust construction, many of the massive bunker systems of the Atlantic Wall are in most cases still surprisingly well preserved and remind of a dark time in the past. Some of the bunkers can be visited, but some are partially or completely hidden under the sand or are so badly damaged that you can no longer enter them.
