There is a snack bar under the castle, where food is also served during the week, and at the end of the week the selection is even larger. If the climb to the Old Castle is not enough for you, you can continue from there to St. Tilno on the Repenjska hill.

A trip to the castle is suitable for all seasons - in winter for catching the sun's rays and watching the snow-capped Alps in the distance, but in summer it is a welcome cooling off due to its higher location and shady path.

At the foot of the Old Castle in Smlednik is the Calvary with fourteen chapels of the Way of the Cross and three crosses on top, and is a unique architectural specialty. Baron Franc Smledniški, the manor of Smledniš, had it built in 1772 in the axis, or rather the straight line, which connects the Old Castle and the Blood Sign, a chapel in memory of the duke's burial ground in the field below the branch church in Valburga. In order to realize his idea of setting up Calvary in a straight line, he exchanged his land with the neighboring land of the nearby freedman Jakob Jeraj. This is also evidenced by the contract, one of the first in the Slovenian language. This is precisely why Kalvarija can be included in mature works of landscape architecture. Restored and illuminated in 2001, the Calvary, painted by Maša Bersan Mašuk, is one of the most beautiful baroque creations of its kind in Slovenia. Source: https://www.medvode.si/objava/112955

Calvary Calvary Kalvarija, under the Smlednik Castle, was built in 1772 in the Baroque style. A typical example of landscape architecture are also the fourteen Chapels of the Cross, placed exactly on the axis between the old castle and the Chapel of the Bloody Sign (death sentences by beheading were carried out here) on the field where the place of execution was once the Provincial Square .
