small and quiet little town with a nice atmosphere and harbor

The Mount Battie Trail is advertised as a one-hour hike with a steep ascent from the south to the summit at approximately 240 m. The rain the day before and fog until midday make the ascent over the still-wet granite slabs in the forest a challenge (even more so on the descent). As the forest thins, we have the best view of the city by the bay, surrounded by dense forest as far as the eye can see. There is a small, free parking lot at the lower trailhead; we leave the vehicle in the village on Washington Street, also free of charge. This cute little waterside town boasts a very picturesque harbor. It comes as no surprise that Rockport is home to a community of artists who find inspiration in their beautiful surrounds. If you have time to stop in the town, keep an eye out for the statue of Andre the Seal who lived in the harbor until he died in 1986, and was the star of the 1994 film of the same name.

The ferry into Isle au Haut is available from mainland Stonington and costs around $44 round trip for adults. The trip takes 45-60min as you cruise through the archipelago between Isle au Haut and the mainland. More information on the ferry: isleauhaut.com

The lighthouse was built in 1907 and is still active today. The tower is 15 meters tall and its lights can be seen from almost 10 miles away (8nautical miles). The tower was built out of granite and bricks.
