Monroe Lake at 10,750 acres is the largest lake within Indiana. It is also surrounded by some of the state's largest protected forests as well. The SR 446 bridge takes you over the midsection of this scenic lake and area.

Morgan-Monroe State Forest is the second-largest state forest in Indiana, encompassing 24,000 acres. This deciduous forest that was once abandoned farmland was abandoned due to the rocky and poor soil conditions for farming. Morgan-Monroe State Forest and Yellowwood State Forest are two rare locations in Indiana where gold panning can be done with a free permit.

Relax under the shade of trees near the shelter house and enjoy a delicious picnic with family or friends. Keep an eye out for diverse birdlife, turtles, and other wildlife around the lake.

Miller-Showers Park has both artistic and natural features via some paved paths in downtown Bloomington. There are bridges, piers, sculptures, retention ponds, and educational signs along the walkways that make the park work visiting. The park has been well taken care of and is sometimes referred to as the "Gateway to the City."

Griffy Reservoir is the result of the damming of Griffy Creek and is the heart of the Griffy Lake Nature Preserve. There is a great view of the water (whose level is dependent on the time of year) from the bridge. You also get a lot of views from the trails on the banks of the water.

Griffy Lake Nature Preserve is a 1,200-acre nature preserve with scenic woodlands and a 109-acre lake called Griffy Lake. Swimming is not allowed in the lake.

Leonard Springs Nature Park features nearly 100 acres of trails, lakes, waterfalls, caves, and other natural features. This is a great place to go to get away from the crowds and experience nature on more primitive paths.
