The Portland Head Light is located on a rocky promontory in Cape Elizabeth, Maine, and has marked the entrance to Portland Harbor since 1791. It is the oldest lighthouse in the state. The 24-meter-tall, white tower structure was built at the direction of George Washington. Today, the U.S. Coast Guard operates the light, while the former keeper's house houses a museum. The building is owned by the municipality and is located in picturesque Fort Williams Park, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.

The Atlantic bay off Portland is called 'Casco Bay'. The approximately 520 sq km bay is part of the Gulf of Maine and lies between Cape Elizabeth south of Portland and Cape Small, a peninsula in eastern Maine that extends far into the Atlantic. Six inhabited islands lie in the bay and can be reached by ferry all year round. East End Beach backs up to Eastern Promenade, which is one of Portland's most popular waterfront parks. The paved path following the shore line is a great trail to use for accessing this beach area.

Although this town-owned preserve is only 35 acres, it contains a lot: A former granite quarry, an old apple orchard, seasonal ponds, and about 1.5 miles of trail that make for a nice, easy hike.

From a former hay field to a wonderful recreation area. The trails are well-marked and lead you through the fields and forest. For a short break, you will find very nice picnic areas.

The Cherry Hills Trail System is mostly flat and built with gravel. It was completed only a few years ago. You'll hike through woods and along some large fields. Along the way, benches cut from fallen trees invite you to take a break.

The terrain of Robinson Woods Preserve was too inhospitable for farming, and so it remained mostly in its natural state. As a result, the trails take you through areas of white pine, red oak and hemlock, some of which are up to 300 years old. Small streams meander through the terrain, filling picturesque ponds. Trails are sometimes rocky and rooty.

The Eastern Promenade Trail is a paved trail built on an old rail bed that runs along the waterfront. It is a very popular trail as it gives users beach access, ocean views and access to other trails in the area.
