A 7,190-acre reservoir on the Little Platte River with 175 miles of shoreline, where recreation meets wilderness just 30 minutes north of Kansas City. The area offers two full-service marinas (with boat rentals), equestrian trails (over 25 miles), hiking & biking paths, swimming beaches, picnic areas, and multiple campgrounds including Camp Branch and Crows Creek. In the narrower upper arms of the reservoir, the waterway narrows into timbered channels and hidden inlets, providing a quieter environment for paddlers and anglers to escape the crowds.

Lots of people fishing this when I was here today. Busy park, lots of amenities from the HUGE picnic shelter, to rodeo grounds, ball fields, amphitheater, etc.

The Little Platte South Trail is a 5.5 mile long trail through Clay County Park. It mostly follows along the banks of the Little Platte River. The trail also passes by the Aker Cemetery, where some of Smithville's first settlers were buried.

The Copperhead Ridge Trail is a multiuse trail that runs along the banks of the Little Platte River. The path is fully paved and is open to cyclists, walkers and joggers.

The Watkins Mill Trail is an easy, paved path that winds through Watkins Mill State Park. Watkins Mill Lake is the centerpiece of the park and the trail gives you great views of the water. There is also a waterfall that the path passes close to.

Liberty Bend Conservation Area is a beautiful park on the banks of the Missouri River. There is a hiking trail that loops through forests and old fields. The trail originates from La Benite Park.

Hidden Valley's dense foliage and tucked-away pond gives it a wonderful remote feel. A great escape from the city.

The north end of Hidden Valley Natural Area is well shaded by old forest and shelters eight species of fern, including the rare Goldie's fern.
