CCC Campground sits in the heart of North Dakota's Badlands, offering direct access to the Maah Daah Hey and Long X Trails. Campsites are spread across three loops, featuring picnic tables, fire rings, potable water (seasonal), and vault toilets, as well as equestrian facilities for riders. The surrounding buttes and nearby Little Missouri River create a dramatic and peaceful setting, making it a perfect overnight spot for hikers, bikers, and wildlife watchers. **The campground offers both reservable and first-come, first-served sites. Out of the 25 campsites, six individual sites and three group sites can be reserved in advance through https://www.recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/10134015, while the rest are open to walk-ins. If you're aiming for a weekend stay or a visit during peak season, booking ahead is smart—but spontaneous campers still have a solid chance of snagging a spot.

This grassy bench above the Little Missouri River, east of the Maah Daah Hey and Long X Trail junction, is a quiet, scenic spot for dispersed camping. Flat, sheltered by junipers, and close enough to filter river water, it's ideal for thru-hikers stretching longer days—especially with the Long X waterbox nearby for reliable resupply. With picturesque views of the badlands and soft ground to pitch your tent, it's an unofficial site that feels both practical and peaceful.

China Wall is a striking geologic feature made up of multi-colored layers that is a sight to behold on its own. However, if you venture to the top of the wall you will be treated to sweeping views across the North Dakota Badlands.

All told, the Maah Daah Hey Trail runs for 144 miles through the badlands of North Dakota. It's open to all non-motorized uses, including running, hiking, horseback riding and mountain biking — except for when it passes through Theodore Roosevelt National Park. For that stretch, mountain biking is not allowed.

As one of the high points in Theodore Roosevelt National Park, Sperati Point offers breathtaking views of the national park. You'll see its beautiful grasslands, the magnetic badlands and there's a high probability you'll see herds of bison roaming the trails and surrounding wilderness. Remember you're a guest in their home, so give them space and don't interact.

This nature trail (part of the overall Caprock Coulee loop) doesn't have much elevation gain, so it makes a great warm-up or a short run in and of itself. It's very popular with hikers, though, so your best chance of an uninterrupted run is getting out here early or late, or maybe during the week. Keep an eye out for wildlife, including bison, which are fast and dangerous — you don't want to end up running sprints with one of those behind you.

The Cannonball Concretions seem like they are leftovers from a true historic fight. Turns out they are just as much a part of the incredible Badlands landscape as the canyons themselves. Through erosion of the nearby butte, the cannonball concretions are exposed and it is expected more of them will be exposed as erosion continues.

China Wall is a sandy, striped mesa of compacted sand that you can climb to the top of for views of the surrounding badlands.
