wonderfully beautiful area. unfortunately I made a mistake when setting up komoot, which is why I cycled criss-cross through it with Pauline. midlaren, Schipborg, Zeegse, Rolde, Anderen, Annen, schipborg, Zuidlaren and back to Midlaren at the Paviljoen de Bloemert had a drink and a delicious Apfelstroedel eaten.

Peat in Drenthe was created by a combination of geological processes and climate changes. After the last ice age, plants began to grow in the wet conditions of the area. When these plants died, organic matter accumulated and formed thick layers of peat. The wet climate and regular precipitation enhanced this process. The peat grew steadily and the landscape sank under the weight of the peat package. This resulted in vast swamps and peat areas with peat layers up to 10 meters deep. The peat had various uses, including fuel and building material. Today, many peat areas have been converted to farmland, but some remnants of the peat landscape remain.
