A vast bay on the western shore of Chesapeake Bay, the largest estuary in the US. You can find over 300 species of fish, shellfish and crabs as well as ospreys, peregrine falcons and bald eagles here. The waters are also an important nursery area for sharks on the east coast – hammerhead sharks, basking sharks and tiger sharks often visit. Dolphins and whales can be seen here too. It's a paradise for nature lovers.

This beautiful little school is the only one still standing of the more than forty that were similar. It was in use until the late 1960s.

Cycling alongside Wye Mill takes you back in time to think about the history of this area, how these mills operated and how the industry developed here.

It is a perfect place from which to start a good tour of the area.

I recommend, if you are passing through, to plan a visit to the visitor centre.

Here, since 1933, the area has been protected as a refuge for migratory birds. It is now a beautiful place to cycle.
