Yes, yes... I know. This is the most efficient way to get 6,000 STP riders from Kalama to Portland. However, all the charming back roads we saw earlier in the Washington side of the ride are long gone and are now replaced by the shoulder of US Highway 30, a 55mph "stroad" that does not make for a pleasant ride. lots of loud vehicles, nasty drivers and junk to be avoided on the shoulder. It sure gives a bad impression of what Oregon looks like, and makes one happy to get onto the hill at St. Johns bridge.

This is NOT fun to cross. A very narrow, junk-filled bike lane, a steep climb and steep descent, cars flying by at freeway speeds, and expansion joints wide enough to swallow and entire bike tire. This is bad enough that the STP ride organizers actually batch riders together and has motorcycles escort each group across. Major caution point.

The Wayne Naillon Memorial Rest Area is a small picnic area on the Crown Zellerbach Trail. It was created in memory of Wayne Naillon, an integral member of the team that helped to set up the Crown Zellerbach Trail. There is a commemorative sign for Wayne at this spot as well.

The Old Mill Area is a great green space off the Banks-Vernonia Trail. It is an old industrial area that has been reclaimed by nature. There is an old mill building in the center, which has now been decorated with street art.

This beautiful lake is a popular trout fishing destination. It's also the perfect spot for a lovely break when riding your bike around Vernonia!

Banks-Vernonia State Trail is a 23-mile long multiuse trail that runs between the towns of Banks and Vernonia. The trail is popular with hikers and cyclists. This section of the trail meanders through beautiful dense wood and is perfect for a relaxed hike.

The Old Mill Fuel Building is a bunker and the last thing remaining of the Old Mill of the Oregon-American Lumber Company. They operated from 1924 to the 1950s. Today, visitors can check out the pavement and all the street art that has been created on it. It's a quiet spot and a bit of history.
