The Apostle Islands National Lakeshore Trail is a several-mile single-file boardwalk trail from the Meyer's Beach parking lot through a beautiful pine and beech forest along a high ridge along Lake Superior. Open year round for hiking only.

The Meyers Beach Caves, part of Apostle Islands National Lakeshore on Lake Superior, are among Wisconsin’s most spectacular natural attractions. In summer, paddlers launch kayaks from Meyers Beach to explore the towering sandstone cliffs, arches, and tunnels about a mile offshore. Those who prefer land can hike the Lakeshore Trail, reaching the first cliff-top overlooks of the caves in 2 to 2.5 miles. In winter, when conditions allow, the formations transform into dazzling ice caves filled with frozen waterfalls and icicles. Parking, toilets, and trail access are available at Meyers Beach, with a small fee required. A year-round treasure.

Meyers Beach, about 17 miles west of Bayfield, Wisconsin, is a scenic entry to Lake Superior and the Apostle Islands mainland sea caves. The sandy beach offers swimming, picnicking, and a trailhead for the Lakeshore Trail, a 4.5-mile round trip hike to sea cave overlooks. In summer, visitors launch kayaks directly from the beach to explore dramatic arches and caverns—guided tours are available. Winter sometimes allows access to the famed ice caves when conditions are safe. Facilities include parking, toilets, and picnic areas. A small parking fee applies; arrive early during busy months. A natural highlight year-round.

The title to this trip is misleading. You will not get to the Swedish Settlement if you follow the directions given. The Swedish Settlement is east of the parking lot and not on the route indicated. It is in fact, east of Juniper Rock and the Marengo River.

The Namekagon Trail makes a large loop around the Namekagon Fen Natural Area. Here it overlaps with the Patsy Lake trails, which incorporate a variety of winding singletrack, bog views, and bridges.

The Patsy Lake trail is relatively nontechnical and offers fantastic views through the diverse surrounding forest. The lake has two campsites and is a great spot to picnic or just take in the views.

The wooded lakes west of here — Frel's Lake, Birch Lake, and Hildebrand Lake — are highlights of the trail system. To the southeast the trail climbs through scenic forest, and to the north you pass by Emerson Lake and Rock Lake.

The fen is a unique natural preserve that is well worth exploring. There are no trails that lead to the edge of the fen, but the trail here gives you some great views.
