The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has developed a Hiking Club program that features a trail in 68 state parks and recreational areas (https://www.dnr.state.mn.us/state_parks/clubs.html). Sometimes the trailhead for these hikes can be tricky to find, so here is the trailhead for the Lake Bemidji State Park Hiking Club trail. There is a marker with a password somewhere along the length of the trail, but I am not going to reveal that!

Webster Lake Campground is open Memorial Day through mid-October, and has a picnic area that is open to the public. More information is available at the National Forest Service website: https://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/chippewa/recarea/?recid=26626

Minnesota's hunter walking trails are open to hunters and are good places to find grouse and woodcock. The trails around Webster Lake wind through a forest of mostly balsam fir. Of all the hunter walking trails in Minnesota, a 2020 study found that Webster Lake had the highest density and variety of bird species, especially ruffed grouse. If parking is not available at the trailhead visitors can park at the campground up the road. Casual hikers should wear orange to have visibility for hunters.

Strawberry Lake is a small glacial lake nestled between Cass Lake and Pike Bay. The Migizi Trail between Pike Lake and Norway Beach provides scenic lakeside access.

The Norway Beach Interpretive Trail is an easy path that takes hikers and campground visitors on a tour of Norway Beach's beautiful pines and by the Visitor Center.

The Norway Beach Visitor Center is open in the summer and offers weekly ranger programs at 10am and 2pm to explore Norway Beach's native flora and fauna. Visitors can read the "story in stone" by the building's fireplace to learn about its history.

Migizi is the Ojibwe word for bald eagle. Indeed, there are multiple bald eagle nests along the eastern shore of Pike Bay. Ojibwe, Ojibwa, or Chippewa are all words for the group of indigenous people in Northern Minnesota.

Both Pike Bay and Cass Lake are known for being one of the best fishing places in Minnesota. Walleye, northern pike, and perch populations are most notable. Pike Bay is named not for its pike population, but rather for commander Zebulon Montgomery Pike who took the region at the behest of the U.S. War Department in 1806. Cass Lake, once named Red Cedar Lake, is similarly named after General Cass.
