This 7,420-foot pass isn't just great for the views: It's also a nice spot for a restroom break as you hop on or off the nearby Great Western Trail.

Big Mountain Pass sits at an elevation of 7,420 feet and is the saddle of Big Mountain. The pass stands as one of the highest points along the California, Pony Express, and Mormon Pioneer National Historic Trails.

At an elevation of 7,420 feet, this is one of the highest points on the Mormon Pioneer National Historic Trail, first crossed in 1846. It serves as a great stopping point with stunning views and restroom facilities.

Morgan is a small town at 5,068 ft with just over 4,000 inhabitants. It may not be very large, but boasts beautiful views of the surrounding mountains and has a couple of cafes where you can stop to have a snack during or after a ride.

This trail is actually an old forest service road, popular with hikers, mountain bikers and (by winter) skiers and snowshoers alike. It's also part of the original trail trod by early Mormons on their way to the Salt Lake Valley. Note: Dogs are not allowed on this section of trail due to the nearby watershed. You can hike with dogs on the section that runs from Mormon Flat to Big Mountain Pass.

This is part of the route used by early Mormons making their way toward the Salt Lake Valley. Of particular note, this is the only section of trail where dogs are allowed (due to a nearby watershed). Dogs are not allowed from Big Mountain Pass onward, so if you have a dog along you'll need to turn around and hike back to your starting point.

Pass between Morgan and Summit county. Calm and remote in the winter. In the winter, you'll mostly see bicycles and trucks with boats on their way to East Canyon Reservoir.
