Abrams Creek Campground Access Road is a gravel road leading from Happy Valley Road over to Abrams Creek Campground. This particular section of the road connects the camping area (with restrooms) to the trailhead for Rabbit Creek Trail. It follows alongside the river and is a great way to start and finish a hike.

Because the trailhead is so accessible to Cades Cove Loop it is very crowded on weekends. Not uncommon to see folks on the trail in thong sandals, no water, fast food bags (one of the most littered trails). It is a fun trail run with a rewarding cool swim below the falls on a weekday in Summer.

John Oliver Cabin is one of many historical sites along Cades Cove Loop Road. Most of the historical structures on the loop come with parking areas and informational signs. The trail to John Oliver Cabin is longer than most of the other access sites on the loop, but the entire loop is still less than half a mile and the trail is wide and well-marked.

Bote Mountain Trail is either uphill or downhill the entire time, and it only gets steeper the closer you get to the top. The good news is that there is usually water available during the spring and summer months even high up on the trail. The trail also passes through different mountain ecosystems as it changes elevation quickly.

Thunderhead Mountain is a 5,527-foot peak in Smoky Mountain National Park. There is about a mile of trail offering great viewpoints to the west of Thunderhead, but the mountain's actual summit is mostly blocked by brush and trees. Rocky Top, about half a mile west of Thunderhead on the Appalachian Trail, offers much more expansive views. The section of Appalachian Trail to the east of Thunderhead is an awesome, challenging section of trail. It traverses rooty, rocky, and overgrown portions of ridgeline on its way to Derrick Knob Shelter.

Rocky Top is a popular summit on this long ridge between Derrick Knob Shelter and Spence Field Shelter on the Appalachian Trail. This summit sits at 5,440 feet and is technically a subpeak of Thunderhead Mountain (just a little further east along the trail). Many say that this overlook provides the best views from this area of the park.

Spence Field is a high meadow just under 5,000 feet on the Appalachian Trail in the Smoky Mountains. The field is at the intersection of Bote Mountain Trail, the Appalachian Trail, and a short spur trail to Spence Field Shelter. Bears frequent this area so make sure to follow LNT principles.

The Middle Prong Trail follows Lynn Camp Prong (a wide creek in the Smoky Mountains) for several miles. The first three-quarters of a mile up the trail has continuous overlooks of cascading rapids and waterfalls in the creek bed. The trail is wide and easy to follow, and if there are crowds (which there will be in the summer and fall months), the cascades just drown out the sounds of the other visitors.
