High in Nevada’s Toquima Range, the Alta Toquima Wilderness protects over 35,800 acres of rugged alpine terrain, wild canyons, and sweeping vistas. Its crown jewel is Mount Jefferson, with the South Summit reaching 11,949 feet, the highest point and centerpiece of this remote wilderness. Trails lead hikers into a landscape of glacial cirques, sparse tundra, and rare high-elevation plant zones. A geothermal pool within a limestone cavern, the water is a constant temperature of 33 °C (91 °F). It is believed that the caverns can go as deep as 130 meters (ca. 427 feet), although the bottom has never been mapped out.
