A meeting point where the forested Bear Creek Trail connects with the steeper Ballard climb. It’s a good spot to pause, refill energy, and decide whether to continue deeper into the canyon or push higher toward alpine views.

A charming little town in the Rocky Mountains, it has a past as a mining settlement and a present as a tourist destination. On the southern side of the valley is a ski resort with hiking trails, and further east, untouched areas are located beyond the ski slopes. On the northern side of the valley, there are hiking trails and plenty of nature.

For a ski resort built from scratch in the 20th century, Mountain Village is quite impressive. Hiking, mountain biking, and golf are available in the summer. A weekly public scientific lecture is held for laypeople, for which one participant is selected from one of the workshops taking place that week in Telluride.

Beautiful view and easy to reach

The views down over Trout Lake with its mountain backdrop from here on Highway 145 are simply breathtaking. The lake is set in an incredible rocky amphitheatre of 13,000 foot peaks, and the tranquil foreground setting of Trout Lake against this jagged skyline makes this a spectacular vista as you ride by.

Placerville is a tiny town just northwest of Telluride, Colorado and a popular destination for cyclists coming from Telluride. There is a great little general store where you can grab snacks and drinks to refuel on your ride.

The town of Mountain Village is just southwest of Telluride, however it sits 790 feet higher at 9,540 feet in elevation. It's home to the Telluride Ski Resort and offers a free gondola down to Telluride.

The San Miguel River starts southwest of Telluride in the San Juan Mountains and flows northwest along the Uncompahgre Plateau. It's one of the last free-flowing rivers in the Southwest
