Slater Creek valley narrows around a volcanic rock, which causes the road and the river to squeeze by and cause occasional road damage. Just south of the rock the valley widens and the road splits in two, one on each side of the creek

The Gates of Lodore Trail is an easy 2-mile roundtrip to a scenic viewpoint at the entrance to Lodore Canyon. The trail starts at the Gate of Lodore Campground and leads over gravel and rock just above the Green River.

The Harpers Corner Trail is a 2-mile roundtrip along a scenic ridge that leads to an overlook with stunning views over the remote canyons. Juniper tree and pinyon pines offer much needed shade on hot summer days while the Green River is flowing through Whirlpool Canyon over 2,500 feet below you.

Craig sits at 6,198 feet and is known as the 'Elk Hunting Capital of the World.' Steeped in cowboy and Wild West history, it was once a hub for outlaws to hide due to its close proximity to three states. Today, it's better known for outdoor recreation, such as fishing on the Yampa River, camping, and hunting in the Routt and White River National Forests.

In Yampa Valley, you will find the 900-acre Elkhead Reservoir State Park. The Reservoir offers an abundance of outdoor recreational activities. Hiking is best on the East side of the reservoir on the Mountain View Trail. There are little to no trees around, so the sun can be incredibly powerful during hotter days.

Black Mountain is one of the most prominent peaks in the Elkhead Mountains. The Elkhead Mountains are a relatively low mountain range compared to other Colorado ranges, but Black Mountain still stands tall at 10,865 ft (3,312 m.). The summit is interesting because it's more of a plateau and ridge, which gives you lots of freedom at the top to explore and find your favorite views. This area is very remote and so are the trails. It can be hard to stay on the trail to the top sometimes. It is unlikely you see other hikers on the trail.

On the south shore of Freeman Reservoir, you'll find a small platform cut into the lake with some big boulders, which is a great spot for fishing or a scenic picnic.
