At the southern terminus of the Colorado there is a parking lot for about 20 cars. It’s quite a popular trailhead, so it will not be hard to get a ride into Durango if you need it. There is a pit toilet and a trail sign with map for the Colorado Trail and the area.

Smelter Mountain is a great viewpoint with some decent history as well. From up here, you have a great view over Durango and the surrounding mountains. During the mining era, there was a huge smelter, known as the Durango Smelter, at the base of the mountain, that processed Coke, Lead, Copper, Silver, and Gold from mines all over La Plata County, San Juan County, and Southwestern Colorado. It operated between 1888 and 1930.

The network of trails on Raider Ridge is rocky, dusty, and usually fairly steep. Hikers, trail runners, and mountain bikers frequent the ridge and this lookout, which peers over the city, Animas Mountain, and the Perins Peak Wildlife Area.
