A remote and rugged area in the Cherokee National Forest, Upper Bald River Wilderness offers dense forests, rocky ridges, and the rushing waters of the Bald River. Ideal for backcountry hiking, you can hike across it through the Benton Mackaye Trail, which goes under tops and follows the river for a few miles. Enjoy the sense of solitude, wildlife sightings, and peaceful spots to rest by the river.

The Unicoi Mountain Trail is a loop trail that starts and ends in Murphy, Monroe County, Tennessee. Along this stretch, the trail briefly overlaps with the Benton MacKaye Trail, passing through shaded forests and rolling hills with occasional views of the surrounding mountains.

Climbing the Cherohala Skyway is an epically long climb through stunning Appalachian scenery, reaching high elevations over 5,300ft. The ascent from Tellico Plains is particularly demanding in length, gaining 4500ft despite a gentle average gradient of 3-4%, requiring hours of steady endurance along the smooth tarmac, sweeping curves, and breathtaking mountain vistas.

This man-made reservoir is home to more than 50 species of fish, and even has a swimming beach on it. But in this case, the star attraction is the wheelchair-accessible fishing pier at Fort Loudoun State Historic Park. (You can fish from the shore here, too.)

This is a small creek that has many waterfalls, it is all surrounded by lush forest, following Slickrock Creek Trail, and other trails In Joyce-Kilmer Slickrock Wilderness, the river ends in Little Tennessee River.

This section of trail is filled with various primitive tent camping sites. Most sites are between the trail and the water's edge and are not marked so keep your eyes peeled if looking for an overnight spot. When choosing a site, be mindful of LNT practices and be courteous of other backcountry users.
