The little town of McDermitt sits at the border between Nevada and Oregon and is a trail town along the Oregon Desert Trail. There is one place to stay (motel behind the gas station), a Subway subsidiary, a post office, a casino and a general store.

Winnemucca is a small city in northern Nevada, known for its rich history in mining and its role as a key stop on the California Trail during the mid-19th century. It offers visitors a glimpse into the Old West with its historic buildings and cultural events, such as the annual Ranch Hand Rodeo.

Denio is located in Nevada, but very close to the Oregon border – which makes it a trail town for the Oregon Desert Trail that passes by just a mile north of here. The small town is the most northwestern town of the state and has a restaurant – the Diamond Inn – and a post office, but no accommodation. Opening hours Diamond Inn: 11 am to 11 pm Post Office: Monday through Friday 9 am to 11.30 am & 12 to 3.30 pm, Saturday 12 to 1.30 pm. Denio Junction, another 2.5 miles south of Denio has a 7-room motel, RV spaces, a restaurant, and a small grocery store with snacks, beverages and ice. This is a tricky one, even getting to the trailhead itself is a challenge. The safest approach is to cross the playa and drive towards the Black Rock Hot Springs. From there you can park your vehicle and walk around to access the easier approach to Black Rock Point. Or, if you trust your 4x4 skills, you can drive up the unmaintained road. Either way this is something that can only be attempted during dry conditions. Do not attempt to cross the playa if it is wet, YOU. WILL. GET. STUCK!

Moose Head Mine Trail is not a climb for everyone—with 1,400 feet of gain in 1.8 miles. But if you want to test your legs, the first section winds through shady aspens, while the second section emerges into full sun and switchbacks.
