The church village of Gammelstad (in English: Old Town) is the old centre of the city of Luleå. The church village is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Very nice railway museum, although the vehicles show the ravages of time.

There are around 400 wooden houses in Gammelstad's church town. Most of them are painted Falun red, some are not painted. The houses are grouped around a medieval stone church from 1492, the Nederluleå Kyrka (“Lower Luleå Church”). It is actually a village. But it is still called a church town.

"The church town of Gammelstad was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO on December 7, 1996. It is a well-preserved example of traditional northern Scandinavian church towns. There were once 71 of these. Gammelstad's church town, with 408 houses, is the largest of Sweden's 16 church towns still in existence . The region was an important hub for trade and markets as early as the 14th century. The Nederluleå Church was the center for a parish that stretched from the coast to Norway. Gammelstad is the "old Luleå". As the country rose more and more from the sea, a new port closer to the water had to be founded. This is where today's Luleå came from. Today Gammelstads-Kyrkstad is no longer just a church town where people live on the holidays. There are also permanent residents. The town is also a popular visitor region. Gamelstad is a historic place that is well preserved and even partially inhabited. I had some bad luck with the weather (continuous rain), so that I only drove slowly with the bike, but that was very impressive! The many small houses and the small streets, really nice! And certainly much nicer if the sun had shone;)
