Both mountain ranges ensure that it hardly rains in this semi-desert area.

the village itself is very quiet and everyone you meet looks surprised that you are there. Apart from the narrow streets and the old church there is little to see in this village where the first habitation was in prehistoric times and almost all other major cultures passed here. The village itself on this spot was probably founded in the Moorish period where they enjoyed protection from a castle that overlooks the village.

Not one but four high gates to climb over

For most of the year it is a dry gorge and a great place to enjoy not only views of the impressive geology (in places the heavy, compressed earth crust hangs sheerly above eroded pillars of earth) but also rare birds such as the 'Hobby' which is only found in this part of Europe.

Nice, small and relaxed place before/after the impressive desert.

Vulture shelter, beautiful views of the Sierra Nevada and the Marquesado and Ragua area, also on the Almeria coast, although the shelter is a little neglected. We should take a little more care of the bivouacs.

In Abla there is a historical walking tour that passes all the sights and is well marked. We liked Abla better than the “magic village” of Abrucena.
