The Cartagena Arsenal serves as the base for several units of the Spanish Navy and as a logistics hub for ships calling at Cartagena. It is one of Spain's oldest naval bases, founded in the 18th century. Construction of the Arsenal began in late 1731 and was completed in 1782 during the reign of Charles III. In the 18th century, the naval base was a significant industrial complex with shipyards and workshops for carpentry, rigging, and metalwork, as well as craft workshops producing ship ornaments and decorations. The Arsenal employed several thousand people in the construction and maintenance of Spanish naval vessels. The naval base was expanded in 1849 during the reign of Isabella II. The name of the lighthouse comes from the dam (Spanish: dique) de La Curra on which the tower was built. By bike, you simply ride towards the lighthouse on a road that runs along the artificial dam. The Faro del Dique de la Curra is also called the "Green Lighthouse" because of the color of the upper part of the building and its light. From there you can enjoy a wonderful view, and the little detour on the tour is worth it.
