Incredible views from the north side of the reservoir.

It is an irregularly shaped square, surrounded by stately homes and palaces that reflect the splendor of Brozas in the 16th and 17th centuries, when it was the center of power for the Order of Alcántara. The arcades and facades with wrought-iron balconies are particularly noteworthy, as is the presence of noble buildings such as the Argüellos Carvajal Palace and the Orive Salazar Palace nearby.

The Plaza Mayor of Brozas (Cáceres, Extremadura) is the historic heart of this town, known for its rich heritage and traditional atmosphere. Although not as monumental as those of Cáceres or Trujillo, it has a special charm due to its history and vernacular architecture.

Inside, there are some interesting pieces: the tomb of the commander Antonio Bravo de Jerez, made by Lucas Mitata; five panels by Luis de Morales; a Recumbent Christ, attributed to Martínez Montañés; a carving by Sebastián de Paz from 1639; the tomb of Master Yáñez de la Barbuda, and the font where Saint Peter of Alcántara was baptised.

The Clavero, a lay member in charge of the custody of the keys to the convent and the archive, lived there. In exchange for this custody, the Clavero had over 9,500 hectares of the Alcantara pastures for his benefit.

Built in the 16th century, this historic building is in the Renaissance style with a Gothic cloister and three naves with Plateresque decoration inside. It was restored by the Iberdrola Spain Foundation and currently hosts frequent cultural activities such as English courses for students and teachers from the community or the Classical Theatre Festival. To learn more about this monument and its more than five centuries of history, free guided tours are organised thanks to the Iberdrola Foundation.

Built over the Tagus River near the current Alcántara, in the province of Cáceres, the Alcántara bridge is one of the most beautiful and important examples of Roman civil engineering. Despite being shorter than the one in Mérida and with fewer arches, it is much higher and above all more impressive. The complex is made up of three very different parts: the bridge, the central triumphal arch and a small rectangular temple measuring 5.60 x 4.10 metres. This building consists of a staircase, two Tuscan columns, an entablature and a classical pediment. A restored plaque indicates the name of its builder and reminds us that the bridge will last “as long as the world lasts”:
