9월 27, 2024, Kasteel Huys ter Horst
Kasteel Huys ter Horst has a rich history that dates back to the 13th century. Starting as a (flight) castle with a donjon (residential tower), it has developed over time into a mature H-shaped castle with an outer bailey, Hof ter Binnen, tithe barn and moats all around. From a military structure, the castle, the building later developed into an idyllic residential castle for the wealthy nobility. Due to a lack of money, the then owner sold the castle as building material, stone by stone, in the first half of the 19th century. The ruin that remained became the property of the municipality of Horst aan de Maas after the Second World War. At the end of the 20th century, volunteers, united in the Stichting Kasteel Huys ter Horst, started rebuilding parts of the castle according to historical paintings. Around the ruins of the Huys ter Horst castle there is a park-like landscape that was previously known as the Moelbaerenbos, since 2009 it has been called Kasteelpark Ter Horst. The area has sports fields, an animal pasture and a large hotel. But what you will mainly find there is nature where you can walk and cycle to your heart's content

There was a customs tower here around a thousand years ago. Over the centuries it developed into a castle, initially as a residence for the Counts of Kessel. The events of the war caused considerable damage to the facility in 1944. The ruins were only rebuilt in 2011, but not according to the historical model. With classic shapes combined with modern elements, it was expanded into one of the most modern castle complexes in the Netherlands with upscale gastronomy and a small museum on the upper floor.

It's certainly a matter of taste, but in my opinion the bold combination of old ruins and modern architecture is very successful here. The café inside the building looks very inviting. We were there too early in the day to test out the culinary offerings.

In my opinion, the castle has been rebuilt and restored in an interesting way, even if it doesn't suit my taste.

Thanks to the renovation of the town center that began in 1964, Brüggen's historical character has been preserved. Winding alleys, romantic archways, picturesque mills and traditional buildings give Brüggen its special charm. It is fun to go on a discovery tour in Brüggen and visit the beautifully restored houses, old alleys, city walls and parks. The first mention of the castle and town of Brüggen can be found in a marriage certificate dated December 24, 1289. Around 1306, Brüggen Castle was inherited by the Counts of Jülich. In 1350, it was expanded into the Jülich state fortress. Around 1473, soldiers of the Burgundian King Charles the Bold (1433 - 1477) conquered and plundered the Brüggen fortress and castle. A year later, it was plundered again by the Counts of Gelderland. The castle, which had now been badly damaged, was repaired and a second floor was added. The Counts of Moers received Brüggen Castle as a pledge and around 1494 the Counts of Jülich-Berg bought it back. In 1526 the fortifications of the town and castle were renewed and enlarged. In the years 1561 - 1577, construction work was carried out again and the fortifications were adapted to the development of offensive weapons. The oldest surviving drawing of Brüggen Castle was created around 1623. It shows the castle as a closed structure with four towers (spire roofs). Around 1770 the Rentei was rebuilt by the ducal court architect Klees. The earthen ramparts at the castle were partially demolished. In 1794 Brüggen was occupied by French troops and the Brüggen office was dissolved. Source: https://www.rheinruhronline.de/niederrhein/niederrheinteil2/brueggen/burgbrueggen.htm

Kessel is an old Maas village with a rich history. In 1869 they found a Roman stone of the gods when they demolished an old church. This stone was dedicated to Minerva, Hercules and Juno. The remains of an old villa have also been excavated in Kessel-Eik. A late Roman iron helmet with a Christ monogram was even discovered in Kessel, which can now be seen in the Center Céramique in Maastricht. They also found a large copper kettle in Kessel, now in the Limburgs Museum in Venlo.

Built by the Counts of Kessel in the 13th century to secure a ford across the Schwalm, it came into the possession of the Jülich dukes at the beginning of the 14th century, who replaced the existing building with a brick fort. After Brüggen was occupied by French troops in 1794, it was sold to a private individual under the French government at the beginning of the 19th century and today houses a museum, among other things.

Brüggen owes its existence to its geographical location. Located at the only passable ford across the Schwalm, the first settlement was formed at the crossing of two trade routes between the Rhine and the Meuse (first mentioned in a document in 897). The Counts of Kessel had a 16 m high gravel island built according to the Dutch model in order to make the swampy subsoil buildable. Then they had a castle built (oldest documentary mention 1289) to secure this stage location. Brüggen became the center of the office of the same name.

A historic market, monumental farmhouses and mansions, cozy terraces and a magnificent Maas panorama with the castle as an eye-catcher, the most modern castle in the Netherlands with a centuries-old history. This is Kessel, a place where time sometimes stands still.

Villa Oeverberg in Kessel was built between 1870 and 1872 for Frederik Hendrik Charles van Keverberg, the last resident of Keverberg Castle in Kessel. Baron Frits lived there until his death in 1876. Villa Oeverberg stands on a steep terrace overlooking the Meuse River. The rear facade offers a magnificent view of the Meuse River. The former lord of Kessel had his new house built in the castle style. The house clearly shows the influence of English Neo-Gothic architecture, a style quite rare in the Netherlands. The castle garden was largely sold and later built upon. A small section of the original garden remains, with a circular driveway on the Veersepad. The villa has a rectangular plan. The building has four stories. The main floor is above the basement. The entrance is reached via a monumental staircase. Striking are the battlements, behind which lies a gently sloping hipped roof. The facades of the main building of the Oeverberg in Kessel are symmetrical. The windows on the first floor are the largest, decreasing in height on the upper floors. In the 1950s, a two-story conservatory was added at the rear. In 1964, architect J.J. Rijs from Venlo modernized the building.
