Stunning views and a great short walk to the War Memorial.

This famous summer residence of the British royal family can only be visited during spring and early summer with an entrance ticket through the main entrance. This provides access to the castle gardens and the castle ballroom, where a different exhibition is held each year. There is also a café and a gift shop. Since 2025, a few tickets per day have also been available for enthusiasts to visit the castle's private apartments in small groups, including the room where Queen Elizabeth II's last photograph was taken. Very special, but also highly sought-after and expensive.

The first building on the site of New Slains Castle was constructed for Francis Hay, 9th Earl of Erroll, following the destruction of the original Slains Castle. Named Bowness, it was located on a sea cliff close to what is now the village of Cruden Bay. Francis Hay, 9th Earl of Erroll, a convert to Roman Catholicism, had conspired with other Catholic nobles, including the Earl of Huntly, with whom he joined in a brief rebellion in 1589. Erroll was also a signatory of the "Spanish Blanks", documents signed by members of the Catholic nobility of Scotland, and otherwise left to be filled in with the terms of Spanish aid. Erroll was declared a traitor in 1594, and Old Slains Castle was destroyed on the orders of King James VI. After a period abroad Erroll returned to Scotland, and abjured Roman Catholicism in 1597, subsequently returning to royal favour. He abandoned Old Slains and built a courtyard and square tower on the present site, around 1600.

Surprised at how open to the public this is given its proximity to the cliff edge and how perilously perched one of the rooms is over the water below. I'm usually one to scoff/rail at over-eager H&S regs but in this case, I reckon closing off at least part of the castle might be in order. A fence at/around the headland wouldn't go amiss either. Approach at your own risk!

The present castle was built in the 16th century on the site of an older 14th century castle. It was positioned at a cross road to help the local lords control the marauders. You can't enter the castle any more, but you run right past.

The magnificent Castle Fraser, one of the largest tower houses in Scotland, was the ancestral home of the Fraser of Muchall family. Its history can be traced back to the 15th century. Numerous interesting features in the castle indicate that the Frasers were quite an illustrious family.

The castle and the grounds can be visited and explored. There are two or three small walks from the castle car park, all way-marked, taking you through the grounds and woodlands of the Castle Fraser estate and can fill an afternoon.

One of the largest tower houses in Scotland, with a core that dates from as early as 1450. The traditional walled garden is vibrant throughout the seasons, with specimen trees, herbaceous borders and a wide variety of fruits and vegetables. You can also enjoy some of the fresh produce in our recently refurbished courtyard tearoom. The extensive parkland surrounding this fortified castle inspires imaginations of all ages. Two waymarked trails offer the chance to spot red squirrels, roe deer, buzzards and dragonflies. - https://www.nts.org.uk/visit/places/castle-fraser - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castle_Fraser

There has been a castle here since the 14th century, but the current Invermark Castle is from the 16th century. It's an oblong tower that stands at the end of the Glen Esk Road at the start of the gravel track up to Loch Lee. The castle was abandoned in 1803 and is now partially ruined. You can go up to the base but there is no access inside.

Tolquhon Castle remains seem quite impressive. Unfortunately the grounds are closed, so can only observe the castle from the street. Still a good spot to leave the car for a walk. https://www.historicenvironment.scot/visit-a-place/places/tolquhon-castle/

The peninsula that Dunnottar Castle sits on is such a natural stronghold that there is evidence of use for over 5000 years. The stone building remains that can still be seen date back to the late 1200's. The castle is a paid entry attraction, but it is worth a visit and quite amazing inside. You can also get great views of the castle from the beaches and cliff tops on either side if you fancy a quick walk to have a look. Well worth a stop if you're riding past.

The tower house here was built in around 1260. It's mainly ruined but thought to have once consisted of a single rectangular tower with walls almost 2m thick and several floors. The castle was built on the site of an older hill fort settlement which dates to around 250BCE. The hill is 268m high and offers great views in all directions. You can walk up and back from the car park in the southeast but why not make a longer loop following the path over the hill and then around the obvious loop to the north, it's about 5km.

Braemar Castle was built around 1628 as a safe hold and seat of power for the Earls of Mar. It changed hands during the Jacobite uprising and when that conflict ended, and the threat of war had diminished it was converted into a stately home. Today it's owned by the local community with an excellently preserved interior. It's very much worth a visit and can be linked into a wonderful circular walk from Braemar around Creag Choinnich.
