There's nothing more to see here than a gate. Hidden behind it, of course, is Balmoral Castle, the famous summer residence of the British royal family. With a ticket, we were able to visit it with our bikes in hand, which was really nice.

During our cycling trip through the Cairngorms, we slept in a bothy every night, but we didn't find it anywhere else as comfortable as this one ;-) Delicious coffee and food. Plenty of room for everyone, and with an outdoor shop next door, it's also the perfect place to stock up on rations.

Dont be put off by the modern concrete exterior of the V&A. Its very nice inside and worth a visit.

Steep steady climb so take your time

One of Aberdeenshire's iconic climbs. Steep but short!

Hard to argue with the long views as you zoom along. And very little traffic.

The discovery is a great attraction, and the ship can be boarded and explored. Right next to the V&A which often has free exhibits. The waterfront is a good place for a walk.

The visitor centre is quite informative about the local flora and fauna. Car parking spaces have increased greatly with the opening of the parking area nearer the visitor centre. In May 2024, the parking fee was £5 per day payable using various methods at a machine including contactless.

The small car park (of which there is now a charge) is the staring point for may Munros in the area as well as smaller peaks and walks around the loch. Here there is a small visitor centre with toilets. The walk to the loch takes about 10 - 15 minutes and can be made in to a circuit. Those who decide to walk all the way around the loch should allow for 2-3 hours.

This is a really neat spot to relax with a stunning view over the bay and harbor of Stonehaven. There are two benches, so just take your time to enjoy this picture postcard scene.

Spittal of Glenmuick consists of just a few buildings and a tiny forest. There is a ranger station and some restrooms. If you are lucky, you might spot some deer in the meadows.

Here you will find both the V&A museum and the RRS Discovery. The V&A is a magnificent building that showcases the best of Scottish design, and the RRS Discovery is a ship that was built in 1901 for scientific purposes in the Polar regions. It went on its first expedition between 1901 and 1904 to Antarctica, and now stands in the Firth of Ray for visitors to enjoy its grandeur.

The Spittal of Glenmuick has a visitor centre, toilets and a cafe (only open at peak times). It's the head of the valley below Loch Muick which is an amazing mountain loch in the southern Cairngorms. There is a trail around the loch and numerous paths off into the mountains but none are suitable for road bikes. This is a beautiful place to ride too though and well worth the effort of the out and back road up from Ballater. The car park is at 418m and the road starts at around 200m so it’s a good climb and a fun descent.

A family run deli and shop, top quality sandwiches, cake, drinks and snacks. All you need to stock up before a long ride. Open Mon to Sat 9:00 - 15:00.

King Robert II had a hunting lodge here in the mid 1300's. It was extended and improved and by the mid 1600's it was a castle. In 1852 Prince Albert purchased the estate for Queen Victoria but they decided it was too small and built the current castle on the same site. The older castle was demolished, and Balmoral has remained personal property of the royals ever since.

Great viewpoint down to the harbour and across the town. You can watch the fishing boats come in, go for a ride and then order some super fresh and tasty fish and chips on your return.

The longest of the 10 Aberdeenshire Ascents, Cabrach climbs for over 9km gaining about 280m of ascent with an average gradient of just 2.6%. It's exposed and good in either direction so it may be worth checking the wind direction and adjusting your route accordingly.

A tough but fun climb with a good surface. It's about 1.9km long with 168m of ascent and an average gradient of about 9%. The road high point is 386m. There is a bench at the top if you need an excuse to lean your bike against it for a pic :-)

Arguably the best climb in the area and used in the Tour of Britain. Cairn o' Mount ascends about 330m over 3.4km with an average gradient of 9.7%. The road summit is at 441m, if you decide to get off and walk up to the full summit it's 455m. The road is good in either direction, the final ascent is slightly shorter from the north.
