Carlisle Castle, built in 1092 by William II, is an imposing medieval fortress on the edge of Carlisle city center, near Hadrian's Wall. The castle played a key role in the Anglo-Scottish conflict, withstanding at least seven sieges between 1174 and 1461. In 1568, Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned here, and during the Jacobite Rising of 1745, it was the last English fortress to be besieged. Visitors can explore the 12th-century gatehouse, the Tudor gun platform, and the keep with its 15th-century carvings. Also within its walls is Cumbria's Museum of Military Life, which chronicles 300 years of military history.

Nice place to take a break

Greystoke is a lovely Cumbrian village boasting charming 17th-century cottages, a picturesque village green, and an ancient market cross with roots dating back to the early 1600s.

In 1968, a strong gale caused flood waters to thunder down the Eden causing the 300-year-old Langwathby Bridge to collapse without warning. In its place this metal girder bridge was built as a “temporary” replacement. It’s still there now and is the longest standing temporary bridge in the country.

The new Pooley Bridge replaced the old stone bridge, which was washed away by the storms in 2015. It lends its name to the village, which has a few nice pubs and helpful shops.

Brutal in places - up to 20% but the views when you get over the top towards Blencathra and the Northwestern Fell are amazing.

Nice rolling, mostly smooth tarmac along the lakeshore. Best done early before the traffic builds up.

Kirkoswald means the "Church of St Oswald" who was the king of Northumbria. Now this pretty little market town is a nice stop in the Eden Valley. The Crown Inn is good with traditional pub food, drinks and snacks. It's normally open 10:30 to 11:00 but opens a bit later Tuesday and Wednesday and closed on Monday. The community village shop is a good place for a mid-ride re-supply. It's open 8:00 - 17:00 every day apart from Sunday when it shuts at 13:00.

Nice local café serving breakfast, drinks, sandwiches, cakes and snacks. Open Mon to Fri 10:00 - 16:00 but closed on Thursdays. Open Sat and Sun 10:00 -17:00. Seasonal opening, closed over the winter months.
