The construction history of the Lucerne Gate remains largely obscure. However, it can be assumed that the tower-like gate was not part of the original city fortifications. Originally (13th century), the gate was probably constructed from ashlars and approximately 7.5 meters high, upon which the central tower was later built. It was divided by ceilings, accessed via stairs, and had a pent roof. The latter was replaced by a pyramid roof in the first half of the 17th century. Even later, in the late 18th and early 20th centuries, the wall enclosing the tower on the north side was added, along with the facade paintings. Historically, very little to no information is available about the Witches' Tower from its earlier period. The tower was built in the 13th century, adjacent to the then-existing city wall in the city moat. Unfortunately, it burned down twice, first during the city fire of 1477 and the second time around 1750. Initially, such towers served as defensive towers.
