The Holy Cross Chapel on the main street was rebuilt after the devastating village fire of 1560. The stained-glass windows depicting the five mysteries of the Sorrowful Rosary were created by Ferdinand Gehr in 1964. Despite the sometimes large number of tourists, the chapel is a place of peace and contemplation. The stained-glass windows enchant the daylight, which falls golden into the Holy Cross Chapel. The installation of these, for their time, very modern stained-glass windows sparked much discussion in the Appenzell region and drew some criticism. Everyone is encouraged to come and experience the atmosphere of this small chapel for themselves.

Under the overall responsibility of the foundation's board of trustees, several dozen people, mostly volunteers, have been operating a guesthouse and a meeting place with a monastery shop on the monastery grounds since 2019. The offerings are complemented by religious services and the opportunity for private prayer and reflection in the monastery church.

Beautiful views, restaurants with outdoor seating

The Waldgasthof's website states that it is also served by public transport. The PubliCar runs between Lehmen and Weissbad and must be reserved in advance by calling 0848 55 30 60. From Weissbad, you can then continue your journey on the Appenzell Railway.

Potersalp is a large alpine pasture area near Chammhalde. The path leads past several alpine huts that are used for grazing during the summer months. The location of the flat alpine meadows is impressive, as the steep north faces of the Säntis mountain range can be admired in the immediate vicinity!

The main town of Appenzell lies in the valley of the Sitter River, surrounded by lush green hills. It was first mentioned in the founding charter of the parish church in 1071 and encompasses the area of the former "farm" of Appenzell. For this reason, the inhabitants of the village are still called "Hofer" (farmers).
