A place to linger

You've conquered the Nufenen Pass (Passo della Novena) by the road sign at an altitude of 2,477 meters. The pass also marks the cantonal border between Valais and Ticino. The pass is one of the youngest mountain passes in Switzerland, having only been built in 1964 and opened five years later. As the highest pass located entirely within Switzerland, it offers a special attraction for road cyclists. However, the approach from both sides is challenging, steep and often windy. Both routes involve over 1,000 meters of elevation gain. Since it's located far from any major towns, chances are your legs will already be a bit tired by the time the climbs begin.

Since the tunnel on the Grimsel Pass road is only accessible by bike downhill, you'll have to take the old pass road. However, it's not a must, as the path, part of which is cobblestone, is much more beautiful and spectacular anyway.

You reach the Lai da Nalps reservoir via a climb of around eight kilometers, which begins in Surrein, just on the other side of the valley from Sedrun. The climb begins with a steeper section and a few tight bends. After that, the road becomes more even, following the right side of the valley until finally, a few beautiful switchbacks lead up to the dam. You could cycle the two kilometers to the end of the lake on a gravel road, but after that, you're definitely not going any further on two wheels.
