The ground on which the Chapel of Our Lady of the Snow, the landmark of Bettmeralp in the Aletsch Arena, was built in 1697, has a long history. Before the current building was built, there was a chapel dedicated to Saint James on the same site. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 𝐀𝐛𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭 𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐟𝐞𝐡𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐭 The Pro Natura Center Aletsch on the Riederalp - opened in 1976 as the first nature conservation center in Switzerland - is dedicated to protecting nature in the Aletsch Arena with its unique fauna and flora. In the middle of a magical natural landscape! Released from the perpetual ice, the adjacent Aletsch Forest developed in the glacier foreland. The pines that make up the main tree population of the protected Aletsch Forest in the Aletsch Arena are gnarled and extremely hardy. They have adapted excellently to the harsh climate above the Great Aletsch Glacier. Some of the pines are up to 1000 years old and are considered to be the oldest trees in Switzerland. The forest is developed with hiking trails that must not be left.
