The emblematic Lac Bleu d'Arolla is an ideal place for a run. Winding alpine trails lead you through classic alpine pastures, over interesting and varied running terrain. The deep blue waters of the lake are a popular destination for tourists and hikers, offering excellent views of the valley and mountains, creating an archetypal Swiss scene.

A small, sturdy alpine refuge, used by hikers and mountaineers who want to climb some of the region's iconic mountains. A large, traditional mountain hut above the legendary town of Arolla. This hideaway offers food, drinks and accommodation, all in a superb location. From the refuge you can have incredible views of the mountains and valley around Arolla, and in good weather you can see the mighty Dent Blanche, as well as the distant Weisshorn, among many others. The drive to the refuge is indicative of its alpine environment, with technical driving on rocky alpine trails, which may be a challenge for some. Make sure you ride within your limits and be ready for the challenge, it's a pretty engaging environment up there. If you wish to stay at the refuge, it is recommended to book in advance, as these refuges can get very busy during peak season.

Rarely climbed by mountain bike, as you may have to walk the bike for most of the climb. However, those brave/crazy enough to do so will be rewarded with excellent views of the surrounding high mountains, as well as a victorious coffee and cake upon reaching the refuge. The descent from the hut to the valley, however, is a fantastic and challenging bit, with countless hairpins and technical passages. Expect some demanding driving, through truly alpine terrain, boulder gardens, hairpin turns and steep descents – so try not to get too distracted by the views.

Now the ruined houses provide a great place to stop and enjoy the fantastic views of the valley and mountains, making this a great place to take a break.
