The Calpe salt flats occupy a depression filled with Quaternary alluvial deposits. The position of the Peñón de Ifach is a decisive factor in the formation of this interesting wetland. It is a lagoon of tombolic origin, created from the development of a double sandbar.

The view of the Parroquia Nuestra Señora del Consuelo in Altea is one of the most beautiful panoramas on the Costa Blanca. The church, also called "La Cúpula del Mediterráneo" (Cathedral of the Mediterranean) because of its striking blue and white domes, sits atop the highest point of the old town and is visible from afar – from the sea, the coastal road, or the cycle path along the promenade.
