Beautiful church - well worth exploring

Went rear brake only down the steepest part (slate section near the end) just to stop the fear of front end washing out.

The old church, along with the manor house and nearby cottages, were enveloped by the waters and lost forever when Caban Coch dam was built. Among the lost houses was Cwm Elan, once the home of poet Percy Bysshe Shelley's uncle. Shelley visited on several occasions and fell in love with the area. In 1812 he tried to buy Nantgwyllt House, as a home to settle into with his wife Harriet. The old church at Nantgwyllt may have been lost, but in 1898 a new church was begun on high ground overlooking the Garreg-ddu viaduct. The architect was Stephen W Williams, who also built Elan Village to house workmen labouring to build the dams. The new church was erected at the southern end of the viaduct.

Pen y Garreg Dam third of the Elan Valley Dams, also known as the middle dam. This dam houses an access tunnel to the central tower which is lit by apertures in the downstream side of the dam. Height - 123 ft above river bed. Beautiful scenery a great ride around this area.

Small chapel rebuilt by Birmingham Water Corporation at the turn of 19 century to replace the one flooded when the dams & reservoirs were built to supply the growing population with water.

An awesome road climb up the side of a hill to the top of the damn, where you can ride along the top on the road. Leads onto a gravel path suitable for gravel/MTB bikes

Pen y Garreg is the third dam up the Elan Valley, often referred to as the ‘middle dam.’ The viaduct at Garreg Ddu further downstream does not resemble the other dams since the dam part of the structure is not visible above the water surface in normal conditions. This dam is unusual in that it houses an access tunnel to the central tower which is lit by apertures in the downstream side of the dam.

Forming a very wet part of the TransCambrian Way, you will want to ensure your footwear waterproofing is up to spec before venturing along here.

The Claerwen dam took 6 years ti complete and was finished in 1952. It was given a late Victorian finsh so that it blended in with the earlier dams in the valley. It's a big one - almost twice the size of the other dams in the Elan valley and the Claerwen reservoir is almost the size of all the other reservoirs in the Elan Valley system combined.

But there's an easy and safe alternative around the rockfall, if you're steady on your feet it's a simple diversion.

Lovely views along the Clarewen reservoir & down along the valley. Great in good weather - harsh in inclement weather!

There are atotal of four dams on the river Elan;. Craig Goch. Pen-y-Garreg. Garreg-Ddu. Caban Coch. The river Claerwen has the newest and largest, Claerwen Dam followed by the unfinished Dol y Mynach dam. With the exception of Dol y Mynach all the dams are also accessible by car.
