Plenty of signs and information to get here but no mention of a fee. £1 per person, £1 per car, 50p per child.... at this point we stopped reading as we don't carry cash. One of the bigger open road passes on Snowdonia. Pretty straightforward from the Penmachno side, once you've crossed the bridge the climb begins in earnest, then it's steep ramps on and off to the top. The little house at the top of the valley is probably 2/3rds to the top of the climb

A beautiful gorge, accessible via a short hike from the landowners' parking lot. The fee is £1 per person plus £1 for parking. You can drop your money into a box, and upon our arrival, an elderly lady with crutches appeared and offered change. The gorge is truly worth seeing. Even if you continue hiking along the river, you'll discover wonderful places to linger.

The grand, ornate stone dam of Alwen Reservoir couldn't be more of a contrast to the neighbouring Llyn Brenig Dam. Llyn Brenig is a reservoir located on Denbigh Moors in North Wales. The artificial lake, which was constructed between 1973 and 1976, was created by building an embankment dam across the Afon Brenig valley. It lies at 1,200 ft (370 m) above sea level on the border between the counties of Conwy and Denbighshire. It is used to manage the flow in the River Dee as part of the River Dee regulation system.

The deep lake of Llyn Aled is located high on the Hiraethog moors. The shoreline is treeless and this bleak location at 250ft above sea level can be breezy, but the surrounding moorland and views are beautiful.

Llyn Brenig is located at the heart of the Mynydd Hiraethog and is a good base for outdoor activities, including walking, cycling, fishing and sailing. It is a great spot for a break off the bike and the area is surrounded by a network of footpaths and a number of way marked trails suitable for biking and walking, including the Brenig Trail. The Visitor Centre provides toilet facilities and a cafe.

Here you have a super good section of singletrack as you meander your way through Gors Maen Llwyd nature reserve to the north of Llyn Brenig. You have fine views but don't let it distract you too much as walkers use this track as well.

Spectacular views of the main Snowdon massive can be had on this great stretch of road on a nice day. It normally is pretty light with traffic too so that is a bonus.

Tu Hwnt Ir Bont Tearoom is a creeper covered cottage on the bank of the river Conwy just outside Llanrwst. It's a good place to grab some food or a hot drink if you start a run from the station here and go exploring in Gwydir Forest. You can create a brilliant route by running from here to Betws y Coed and getting the train back. The cafe is open seasonally so check before you go, it serves a range of hot drinks, cake and lunches all homemade and locally sourced.

A fantastic section of singletrack as you wind your way through Gors Maen Llwyd nature reserve to the north of Llyn Brenig. The undulating trail features on the Two Lakes and Brenig marked cycle routes. Look into the distance when you rejoin the road heading west to east and you may be able to see the ridge of the Clwydian Range and the sea beyond.

A long and winding doubletrack gravel road that flanks the eastern shore of Llyn Brenig. It's a little rough in places so best on a gravel bike, sturdy hybrid or mountain bike rather than a pure road bike. Enjoy the views as you meander around the little inlets and see what wildlife you can see across the water.
