This lock was the first on the Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal to be restored after the canal fell into dereliction. The lock was created when the canal was built c.1800. The section of canal which crosses the river Usk on the nearby Brynich aqueduct is lower than the final stretch of water into Brecon. The bridge over the canal here is joined to the lock walls. The road continues across the river Usk on a five-arch stone bridge constructed in the late 18th century.

Just east of Brecon town is the beautiful, quaint hamlet of Llangorse, or Llangors. The village hosts the largest natural lake in Wales and is simply an outdoor adventure hub that offers a wide range of adventurous outdoor activities throughout the year. It is a very popular tourist destination at the heart of the Brecon Beacons National Park.

This is the canal tunnel that goes underneath the A40 dual carriageway. It is quite a length and the footway is narrow, so if you are on a bicycle I would suggest you take it carefully as pedestrians have right of way here.

Easy trail for all fitness to enjoy

This is part of NCN route 8. Penyrallt hill itself is steep and climbs from 225 m in the west up to 294 m. It's a narrow, tree covered country lane so can be slippery and takes a while to dry. Fun though and not many cars.

The pretty clocktower in Hay-on-Wye was built in 1881, costing £600, which seems good value these days. If you think you've seen it before, it is the same design as the clock tower in Knighton, a border town about 20 miles north of Hay.

Hay-On-Wye is an old market town which lies on the south-east bank of the River Wye and within the north east tip of the Brecon Beacons and just north of the Black Mountains. The town, often referred to as the "town of books" has two dozen bookshops and hosts the annual literary festival - Hay Festival. With year round tourism the town has plenty of delicious cafes and pubs / restaurants to choose from. Be sure to explore the town before passing through.
