What a mess at the top, a long line waitng on the stairs for the top even on weekdays (some struggling to climb the stairs in wind), a totally overcrowded cafe and more slippers than in most shoe shops. The easy ascent by railway probably contributes to this, but even without the chain of hikers working up the easier approaches is impressive.

Where I did highlight, there are many fallen trees from the storm, and they block the route completely. To pass, you must navigate through those trees, I am not recommending that. Route was still blocked on 1 of March 2025.

The name "Snowdon" is first recorded in 1095 as Snawdune, and is derived from the Old English elements snaw and dun, meaning "hill of snow". The Welsh name for the mountain, Yr Wyddfa, is first recorded in Latin as Weddua vaur in 1284. This is probably an approximation of Pen y Wyddfa Fawr. The element gwyddfa in this context means "height, promontory", and also occurs in the Welsh name for the town of Mold, Yr Wyddgrug. Gwyddfa later developed the meaning "gravestone heap", and there is a legend that the giant Rhita is buried beneath the cairn on the summit of the mountain. According to one legend, the giant Rhita was slain and buried on the mountain by King Arthur, while another legend suggests that Rhita was killed by the giant Idris who lived on the mountain Cadair Idris. The mountain is also associated with other figures from Arthurian legend, a legendary Afanc (water monster) and the Tylwyth Teg (fairies). (Wikipedia)

Y Garn is the first summit on the traditional northeast to southwest traverse of the classic Nantlle Ridge. The summit is most notable for the excellent vantage it provides towards the striking north ridge of Mynydd Drws-y-Coed – an enticing line. From here, it's a grade one scramble to its neighbouring summit.

The grade one scramble to attain Mynydd Drws-y-Coed from Y Garn is undoubtedly the most spectacular section of the Nantlle Ridge. At 2,280 feet (695 m) and being relatively close to the sea, the chances of catching the summit and the scramble in full winter conditions are slimmer than on the likes of Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) and the Carneddau. However, when the opportunity arises, it makes for a superb objective.

Y Garn at 633 m is the first summit reached when running the Nantile Ridge from Rhyd-Ddu. It's a striking mountain when viewed from the valley with a great ridge across to Mynydd Drws-y-coed.

Y Garn is the first summit on the Nantlle Ridge from Rhyd Ddu. Its steep northeast face gives it an intimidating apperance but the normal route of ascent is relatively straightforward, missing the stacked contours by taking you up its broad eastern flanks. From Y Garn's summit you can enjoy the Nantlle Ridge's most iconic sight: the arrowhead of Mynydd Drws-y-Coed backed by the craggy Trum y Ddysgl. If completing the traverse, this is the way ahead – an exciting prospect indeed.

Steep pull to the top from rhydd du but worth the effort as views are incredible. Great views of the Snowdon range and Moel hebog.
