Stranraer is the gateway to the Rhinns of Galloway. It holds a rich history as a bustling ferry port connecting south-west Scotland to Northern Ireland. The Castle of St John is an iconic landmark in Stranraer. It dates back to 1500 and stands proudly in the heart of the main street. If you have time, I would visit Castle Kennedy Gardens, which is located 3 miles east of the town. It has a magnificent castle, two lochs, a grand lily pond, and an avenue of beautiful monkey puzzle trees.

The Mull of Galloway Lighthouse is open to the public at certain times with a history exhibition and the opportunity to climb the 115 steps to the top of the tower, to take in the views spanning all the way across to Ireland, the Isle of Man and Cumbria on a clear day! The beautiful seaside village of Portpatrick on Scotland's southwest coast is the perfect place to eat, drink, shop, and relax. On a clear day, it's possible to see across the channel to Ireland from these shores!

A nice view if you're coming to the end of your ride and you look down the hill to your destination! Good views of Loch Ryan and Stranraer from up here, with a nice run down into town.

Ruins of Glenluce Abbey, a Cistercian monastery founded around 1190. Following the Scottish Reformation in 1560, the abbey fell into disuse. Only open April to September, but you can still get a good look at the ruins from the roadside.

Corsewall Lighthouse in the region of Dumfries and Galloway. First lit in 1817, it overlooks the North Channel of the Irish Sea. There's not much here and it's pretty remote so make sure you have food/water if you're coming up here.

The lowest point in Scotland. Great views to N. Ireland and Isle of Man, and the cafe at the lighthouse is good too.

Quaint harbour town with wonderful views out towards Northern Ireland. The port is busy with small fishing boats coming and going and there are a few good pubs and cafes for refuelling.

19th Century Glenluce Viaduct. 8 arches, the viaduct is no longer used. Crossing the Water of Luce the viaduct used to service the train station at Glenluce, also now no longer in service.

Quaint and pretty port town on the coast with a great view across to Northern Ireland. The harbour contains a few good pubs and a nice view of the lighthouse.

Best done on a gravel bike rather than a road bike. Tarmac a bit loose in the area and there are cattle grids. Large cafe though and great views. One to include on your ride around the South Rhins!

Glenluce station opened in 1862 and ran to London Euston via Carlisle, Castle Douglas and Dumfries Railway followed the Portpatrick and Wigtownshire Railway to the port at Stranraer. It was closed under the Beeching Axe in 1965.

Perfect spot for a wee mid ride cool down.
