Cathedral is nice but the huge old trees are spectacular

A free car park with space for approximately 12 vehicles perfectly located for exploring either Griffin Forest or Calliachar Forest.

On a practical note, it's one of the few bridges over the river in this area so it's likely a waypoint. That said, it's worth a pause to look upstream and downstream and take the obligatory photo. If you're naughty, there's a jail built into the bridge underneath.

They do not serve food anymore. But there is a cafe next to it. The original chef with the good vegetarian breakfast is now working in the garden cafe down the road.

Taybank does excellent food outside

A waypoint with alas a lot of scaffolding. Plenty of nice places in Dunkeld for refreshments. There's a dirt path, muddy after rain, around the east side of the Cathedral property; there's no way through the Cathedral property bounds. Dunkeld Community Archive is nearby in The Cross.

The east riverside path offers a splendid ride, predominantly on asphalt, and forms part of National Cycle Network (NCN) 77. Around Dunkeld House Hotel, the route is a shared space with vehicles. Between the hotel and Dunkeld, riders are treated to a choice between parallel paths: a slightly elevated gravel path and a lower, closer-to-the-river dirt path. Both options provide a very rideable experience. On the west riverside, there’s a dirt path that truly calls to MTB and gravel bike enthusiasts.

A nice little track along the Tay , really peaceful

There's an old prison built into the bridge base on the east side.

Free parking at Cally Car Park; however, the car park gets full on popular days like the weekend and bank holidays. A good gravel track, of various grades, climbs steadily north past Mill Dam (take a photo) and on up to Loch Ordie (take more photos). The track is used by cars up to near Mill Dam; beyond that it's more light-duty off-road vehicles. There are a few gates to open and close en route. The route gets more scenic towards Loch Ordie.

Like the village the Cathedral has a lot of history albeit today it's mainly a ruin. More importantly there's a shared dirt path around the Cathedral allowing access to the riverside path and travel north.

In 849, relics of St Columba were removed from Iona to protect them from Viking raids. They were brought to Dunkeld by King Kenneth MacAlpin, who appointed a bishop at Dunkeld. Columba became the patron saint of Dunkeld and its monastery. The see was revived in the early 1100s, when Cormac became Bishop of Dunkeld. The cathedral developed over about 250 years, and the earliest surviving part is the choir of the late 1200s. It later became a parish church. The nave was begun in 1406, and lost its roof shortly after the Protestant Reformation of 1560. There are paintings dating from the 1500s on the vault of the bell tower’s ground floor, which once served as an ecclesiastical court. There are also fine memorials in the choir (not in our care), including the effigy of Alexander Stewart, Earl of Buchan – notorious as ‘The Wolf of Badenoch’.

Easy gravel trails for any bike

Dunkeld Bridge was built by Thomas Telford in 1809 and was the main road north to Inverness until the A9 was built in 1977. Today, it provides excellent views up and down the River Tay.

Very helpful and informative the bike shop staff. Problems can be solved here. Cafe is excellent.

Seems odd, but this narrow bouncy bridge is on the cycle network. Good views of the dam and definitely a more interesting, if somewhat slower, route than the adjacent road.

White water canoeists are often to be seen 'playing' just upstream of the river crossing bridge. Worth a stop to view. And of course, there's the chocolate shop.
