Discover the remains of an old bothy or shelter that was once used by drovers, travellers and those working in the surrounding highlands. The ruins reflect the area's history as a crossroads for trade and travel through Scotland's rugged landscapes, and are a beautiful place to stop and explore whilst on the West Highland Way Trail.

Perhaps the best accommodation on the West Highland Way: lovingly furnished in an old church with modern showers and a small, well-kept meadow for tents. The food is great. So if you want to take a break from trail food, then this is definitely the place to stay!

About 1.5 km above Inversnaid is the Inversnaid Bunkhouse - lovingly furnished in an old church including a really excellent restaurant. Because the operators know that the WHW walkers hardly want to walk up the mountain after this stage, they offer their guests a shuttle. In my WHW experience, this was the nicest overnight stay on the whole trail!

Take the ferry from here to the west shore of the loch to avoid the unrideable trail northwards

Even for the most proficient MTBers this is incredibly tough, and almost impossible going with luggage. Best to take the ferry from Rowardennen or Inversnaid to the road on the west shore of the loch to continue your northward journey

Inversnaid Bunkhouse is a unique hostel and restaurant situated along the beautiful Arklet Water river that flows between Lock Katrine and Loch Lomond. It's the perfect place to rest on a tough walk, or fuel up before setting off. It's quirky, characterful and serves such a delicious range of traditional Scottish foods.

Old military road rises above Loch Arklet and provides some gorgeous views over the surrounding landscape. The road was built in the 1700s to enable soldiers to move quickly to and from Inversaid Garrison. The panoramic mountain views along this path are sublime. You've got Maol Mor to your left, Beinn Uamha to your right and Cruinn Beinn up ahead, all enveloping the crystal clear, still waters of Loch Arklet.

Fun section and much better than the road

The Three Staircase is a beautiful waterfall on the West Highland Way.

Well located cafe for a break while riding round Loch Katrine. Worth checking opening hours in advance as it isn't always open in the evenings.

The Loch Katrine ferries can be caught here to travel back to Trossachs Pier at the eastern end of Loch Katrine. There are two ferries running in the summer but only one in the spring and autumn. Ferries run regularly from 23rd March to 3rd November and less frequently over the winter. It's a long way to have to run back again :-)
