Some fine views over the Loch beside National Cycle route 7. Stop and take in the wildlife, with a good description of the various water-dwelling creatures in the area.

Nice Cafe, also a public loo in the Abbey car park which is in good order and well looked after.

Great place to take a break on NCN route 7.

Good place for a wild swim.

Unfortunately the Abbey is currently closed to public access because of the risk of falling masonry. Let’s hope they get it open again soon.

Lovely old mill. Well worth a visit.

Right by the roadside is this ruined castle. With no fences preventing access, you can pull your bike up and take a really close look

Ride this trail in the south of Scotland and look right across the sea to the mountains of the Lake District of England!

Great Abbey Ruin to visit. and have a look around, you can't go inside. The café opposite is great, well worth a visit.

The A 711 and A710 may not be very busy but, as often in rural districts, the locals do tend to drive fast. A711 in particular can be a bit of a race track - but good village shop/cafes in Auchencairn and Palnackie (Check hours on Facebok).

The Abbey of Dulce Cor, better known as Sweetheart Abbey, was a Cistercian monastery founded in 1273 in what is now the village of New Abbey, in the historical county of Kirkcudbrightshire in Dumfries and Galloway. Lady Dervorguilla undertook many charitable acts in her late husband’s Lord of Scotland John Balliol's memory. These included founding the Cistercian abbey of Dulce Cor (Latin for ‘Sweet Heart’) in 1273. It was the last Cistercian monastery to be established in Scotland. When she too died in 1289, Dervorguilla was laid to rest in front of the abbey church’s high altar, clutching her husband’s heart to her bosom.

Great viewpoint out over the Nith Estuary. On a clear day you can see across to England. The road surface running parallel to the coast is pretty good too.

The beach just goes on an on!! Huge views of Sandyhills beach right across the Solway Firth. On a clear day you can see Whitehaven and the Lake District in England.

Not something you see everyday in Southern Scotland, the birds are quite happy to pose for photos.

Makes a really good round trip going back to Dumfries on the coast roads, A711 to Dalbeattie and A710 to Dumfries (they may be A roads, but not very busy). Probably better done the other way round as the coast route is longer so better done before a cafe stop in Kirkcudbright.
