8월 13, 2025, The Merrick Summit
The landscape is stunningly beautiful, but the paths are not as easy to walk as advertised. The barely discernible path up leads almost entirely through muddy, boggy terrain. We often sank ankle-deep, at times knee-deep. From Loch Enech onwards, there is no discernible path; the ground is drier, but eroded and full of holes. The way down is the official route, and considerably better. They've tried to make everything more walkable with fleece and gravel, but the water has already washed away much of it. Unfortunately, it's hard to enjoy the scenery while walking, as you're so busy trying not to slip and sink with every step. In the end, we were glad to be back down with our bones intact. The path can only be recommended with reservations.

Wide grassy ridge between Benyellary and Merrick summits. Very windy when I was on it, with beautiful views down to valley/glen

The bench is no longer there. There was a swallows nest in the room to left of door so try not to disturb it. Beautiful views from it and neighbouring burn

I’ve seen this bothy on YouTube via:#thehappyhippie & a few others & although I won’t be lucky enough to visit myself my adventurous seester just might so would like some more info. I’ve seen some, what one hiker called, “poltergeist” activity caught on video. Strange activity has been reported ranging from: anxious feelings overnight caused by noises that make the visitor feel like someone else might be arriving all the way up to furniture actually moving on its own but it seems like the level of activity you get depends on the weather &/or your beliefs since the people hearing noises didn’t really claim to be “believers” but the ones who saw furniture moving most definitely were + there was a furious storm raging outside making it an even harder choice for leaving & getting soaked or staying & getting scared, lol. Not trying to poke fun or anything but should me seester decide to explore that area again I’m pretty sure it’s something she’d be interested in so would like some more info about the shepherd who built it or if perhaps there’s any “local” type of story that might give a potential reason for the things people have actually caught on camera?!? Regardless I’d like to thank everyone for sharing whatever you can since this is how we, as siblings, tend to spend time together… I do the research and she enjoys the travel & if you knew us growing up you’d have thought it be the other way around but life doesn’t always go as you’d hoped but I will say this much, as both of us are avid believers in the idea that just because it’s unexplainable doesn’t make it impossible & paranormal is possible because in this life we’ve learned one thing for certain & that is that at the end of the day… “stranger things have happened!” Thanks again for sharing & remember: Bsmart+Bsafe=Bhappy!! TTFN ✌🏼

4월 20, 2025, Wild Swimming Spot on the River Cree
when the water level is fine it's lovely place for a dip and cooling off, sadly it is too smal for a swim. lower down the path there may be a better spot but I like slightly hidden spots so not everyone had to see me

2024 update: There's no windows or doors, but there's a roof that looks pretty solid. Use at your own risk, of course 🙏

Great little hike with little foot traffic and a free carpark. Lovely views when the clouds lift and babbling brooks all over.

8월 6, 2023, Loch Trool
Please consult the large notice board at the trailhead. This is a commercial forest and currently, timber harvesting is taking place along the southern flank of the Loch (hence tha barriers encountered by abp1). There are diversions in place to avoid the southern flank, rerouting via the north shore. This is detailed on the notice board. Also, please be aware that this is not an official MTB route, and taking a bike along it is not a good idea since the trail will have walkers of all abilities along its length, most of whom will not be expecting MTBs at all.

7월 6, 2023, Loch Trool
We tried to do this tour on June 21, 2023, but had to cancel. After approx. 13 km you come out of the forest into a wide valley. The landscape is very beautiful, but the path is destroyed by a large number of watercourses and you have to dismount every few meters. After that, the path is obstructed by massive willow barriers with barbed wire. The route would have to be laid out differently, otherwise this tour is not recommended.

Easy way up, can get busy if the weather is nice. To spice it up and to avoid walking back the same way, worth making the loop and to walk back through the valley along the lochs - just be prepared for the boggy path.

You may need to bring your own history book to understand the role King Bruce played and why the battle is important as you don't get much more than just the rock with an inscription

4월 2, 2022, Bruce's Stone Memorial
Bruce's Stone commemorates Robert The Bruce and was unveiled 05/06/1929. The stone reads 'In loyal remembrance of Robert The Bruce King of Scots whose victory in this Glen over an English force in March 1307 opened the campaign of independence which he brought to a decisive close at Bannockburn on 24th June 1314.' The stone overlooks Loch Trool in the Galloway Forest Park.

3월 26, 2022, The Merrick Summit
Merrick is the biggest of the Donald classification of hills in the southern uplands of Scotland. Use the Merrick trail (from the upper Bruce's stone car park) if you're looking for the most straight forward ascent/descent option - a total of around 14km. Alternatively, do what I did and plan a multi-day route involving additional mountains in this stunning area of Galloway.

3월 26, 2022, Benyellary Summit
In some ways, this mountain is just 'on the way' up to Merrick but it deserves a Highlight in its own right! There are an abundance of lochs and lochans to spot from the summit of Benyellary which I absolutely love. Definitely take the time to pause here when you're hiking up Merrick.

3월 26, 2022, Culsharg Bothy
Culsharg is a non-MBA bothy that sits on the Merrick Trail in the Galloway Forest Park. It's quite close to the road so probably a busy bothy, we didn't have time to stop and explore inside unfortunately.

3월 26, 2022, Start of the Merrick Trail
This point marks the start of the Merrick Trail, a short walking trail to the summit of Merrick (the highest Donald in lowland Scotland). This trail weaves up Merrick via Benyellary from the Upper Bruce's Stone car park in Glen Trool.
